Geo-Tagged Photos — 2026 Mandatory Requirement Explained

Under the 2026 Amendment Regulations (Effective 1st April 2026)

All State and Central License applications must include geo-tagged photographs of business premises — colored photos with GPS latitude/longitude metadata embedded in the image file. This applies to new applications, modifications requiring premises re-verification, and any re-classification requests.

What to Photograph:
  • External facade showing signage and complete address
  • Main entrance of premises
  • Processing area / kitchen (for manufacturers & food service)
  • Storage area with product visibility
  • Packaging area (if applicable)
  • Water source and treatment setup (for manufacturers)
  • Dispatch / loading area (for warehouses & manufacturers)
How to Ensure Proper Geo-Tagging:
  • Enable Location Services / GPS on smartphone before taking photos
  • Use default camera app — filter apps strip metadata
  • Take photos in daylight for maximum clarity
  • Verify GPS coordinates are embedded in photo properties
  • Upload as JPEG in original quality (do not convert to PDF/screenshot)
  • Do not use WhatsApp/Telegram copies — transmission strips metadata
  • Transfer via USB or cloud sync (Google Photos original quality)
Common Geo-Tagging Failures That Cause Rejection:

Location services disabled at time of photograph, photos edited through third-party apps that removed EXIF data, screenshots of photos instead of originals, photos received via WhatsApp/Telegram (compression strips metadata), or old photos taken before GPS location was enabled.

How to Verify a Photo is Geo-Tagged:
  • On Android: Open photo → tap info icon (i) → check for latitude/longitude coordinates.
  • On iPhone: Open Photos app → swipe up on photo → look for map with location details.
  • On Computer: Right-click file → Properties → Details → look for GPS section.

Additional 2026 Ongoing Documentation Obligations

Beyond initial application documents, the 2026 amendment introduced expanded ongoing documentation requirements that FBOs must maintain and produce during inspection or audit:

1. Digital Record-Keeping (Expanded Scope):

Daily temperature logs (cold chain & mfrs), cleaning/sanitation schedules, pest control logs, employee training records, batch traceability records, and complaint logs. Mandatory for specific KoBs.

2. FoSCoS Product Recall Plan:

All food recalls now flow through the FoSCoS portal. State & Central License holders must maintain a written recall plan covering trigger criteria, internal/external comms, and recovery methods.

3. Third-Party Audit Compliance:

Under the 2026 risk-based framework, FSSAI may direct accredited third-party audit agencies to conduct compliance audits at your premises. FBOs must maintain records for review.

4. ONDC E-Commerce Compliance:

Sellers on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) must ensure their 14-digit FSSAI number is displayed on all product listings and API data flows.
